Short answer: Medewi is a small surf village on Bali’s west coast in Jembrana, known for one of the longest left-hand waves in Bali. Compared with Canggu or Uluwatu, it is quiet, uncrowded and much cheaper, with ricefields running down to the sea. Nearby breaks include the Pulukan Righthander, Balian and Yeh Sumbul.

Where is Medewi?
Medewi sits on the main coastal road in the Pekutatan district of Jembrana Regency, on Bali’s south-west coast. It is roughly a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Denpasar airport, depending on traffic. From Perth, the flight to Denpasar takes about three and a half hours, which makes it an easy trip for Western Australians.
The surf
- Medewi Point: a long, mellow left-hander over a rock and cobblestone bottom, popular with longboarders and intermediates.
- Pulukan Righthander: a right-hander a couple of minutes from Medewi.
- Balian: a beach break with lefts and rights, about 20 minutes east.
- Yeh Sumbul: a A-frame break a few minutes west of Medewi.
What it’s like to live here
Mornings are for surfing, the warungs are cheap, and traffic is light. You won’t find nightclubs or big shopping centres. Negara, the regency capital is about 30 minutes away. You will find in Medewi most of the necessary groceries you are used to in Australia. A brand new hospital is being built in Pekutatan as well.
Buying land near Medewi

Is Medewi right for you?
It suits surfers who want uncrowded waves, families after a slower pace, and investors looking for land before the wider market arrives. If you want nightlife and beach clubs, the south of Bali is a better fit.
